Event in Gainesville celebrates opening of two new cultural centers

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – UF staff and alumni came together for an event at The Social in Gainesville Friday night to celebrate the opening of the Institute of Black Culture and the Institute of Hispanic and Latino Cultures, or “La Casita.”

“The Institute of Black Culture and the Institute of Hispanic and Latino Cultures really focus on empowerment, advocacy, celebration, culture, and really strengthening sense of belonging for our community, so with the opening of the IBC and La Casita, we’re really looking forward to those values, those tenets really being put to the forefront to represent what our university stands for,” said William Atkins, Associate Dean Of Students and Senior Director Of Multicultural and Diversity Affairs.

The ribbon-cutting for the Institute of Black Culture will be Saturday, and the Institute of Hispanic and Latino Cultures will be Sunday, both at 11 a.m.
