Ministry of Culture and Sports celebrates World Poetry Day

The Minister of Culture and Sports, H E Salah bin Ghanem Al Ali, honours a poet at the cultural forum organised by the Ministry on Thursday.
Doha: A large number of poets attended a cultural forum held by the Ministry of Culture and Sports to celebrate World Poetry Day on Thursday.
The event took place in Katara. It was organised by Qatar Poetry Center in cooperation with the Committee of Poets’ Affairs (Poetry Majlis). Minister of Culture and Sports, H E Salah bin Ghanem Al Ali said that poets and their poems remain relevant for centuries, something proven by history. He expressed hope that future generations will read the work of current poets and take pride in it.
For his part, Director of Qatar Poetry Center Shabib bin Arar Al Rzmani stressed on the importance of celebrating World Poetry Day, that commemorating the day is part of the Ministry of Culture and Sports’ vision of building a society that is both healthy in the body and the mind.
He added that the event will also provide support to both famous poets as well as aspiring ones too.
For his part, member of the Poetry Majlis Mohammed Al Shahwani stressed on the importance of commemorating the day, saying it reflects the state’s appreciation of poets.
Poets from Qatar, Kuwait, the Sultanate of Oman, Iraq, and India recited their poems. At the end of the forum, H E the Minister of Culture and Sports honoured the participating poets for their contribution to poetry.
World Poetry Day was declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) in 1999. Its purpose is to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world.
