Portage County residents may be entitled to real estate tax reductions, Portage County Auditor Janet Esposito said.
Senior citizens age 65 or older, or people who are disabled, are entitled to a homestead credit for real estate or manufactured home. There is an income limit of $32,800, not including Social Security, to get the discount.
The Owner Occupied Real Property Tax Reduction program also is available. To get the credit, the home needs to be the resident’s principle place of residence. The creit can only be received on one home for real estate or manufactured home. Residents must own and occupy the home as of Jan. 1 of the year that they apply. If residents have retained Life Use or Life Estate on the deed where they live, they also can apply for the credits.
To see if they are receiving the deductions, residents should check their real estate tax bill for a dollar amount opposite HOMESTEAD and 2 1/2 percent HOMESITE. If no amount appears on these lines, residents should call the auditor’s office at 330-297-3571 or 330-297-3569 to request an application be mailed. Residents also may visit the auditor’s office, located on the fifth floor of the county administration building,339 S. Meridian St., Ravenna between 8 a/m and 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.
