It’s official. Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin holds the world record for the largest cheeseboard, crushing the previous record (held by Europeans) by more than 1,000 pounds because this is America.
Judges from Guinness World Records verified the cheeseboard, which was constructed on Main and King streets in Madison yesterday.
The final weight? 4,437 pounds of Wisconsin cheese. There were 145 different kinds, all donated from cheesemakers across the state.
The cheeseboard itself was 35 feet long and 7 feet wide. The centerpiece was a 2,000-pound wheel of cheddar.
It took a forklift to get that cheese wheel on the board.
The board was inside what the organization is calling a “digitally fabricated” barn — it was created using computers in a method that’s a cross between 3D printing and wood cutting. The organization has used the barn for other promotional events, including a cheeseboard at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, where people went pretty crazy for our delicious (and free) Wisconsin cheese.
Once the Guinness judge made the official ruling, Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin opened up the barn to people at the Concert on the Square in Madison. Attendees entered raffles to win wheels of cheese with the proceeds going to the Great American Milk Drive. Any leftover cheese is going to the Second Harvest Foodbank.
